Tim Wellens notched a fine stage victory in the Tour of Spain, edging out Guillaume Martin and Thymen Arensman in a three-man sprint.
The Belgian Lotto Soudal also endorses the jersey of the leader of the mountain classification. The three men, the only survivors of the day's breakaway, fought for victory in the streets of Sabiñanigo.
“From the start of the Vuelta, the team’s ambition was to win a stage,” said the very attacking Tim Wellens, who has already spent three days in the breakaway in this Tour of Spain.
"It's really good that the goal is reached so early in the race, we will be able to tackle the next two weeks without any stress. I already had the breakaway in mind this morning.
The start was very difficult, we drove at full speed for two hours. I finally had the chance to find myself in the front group.
The collaboration was not easy because we had with us two riders well classified overall. There were three of us then and the relationship was much better.
We were all at the same level but I was finally able to make the difference on the big percentages just before the finish."
Tim Wellens, winner of several stage races, already has two Giro stages to his name, but this is his first victory in the Vuelta.
After a difficult campaign on the classics, Tim Wellens wanted to take part in the Vuelta to end on a good note this 2020 season so short and so special.
“I had a tough time after I crashed just before the start of the Tour de France.
I returned to competition at the Tour du Luxembourg but it took me a long time to get back to good feelings.
I had a few fears when I got to the start of the Vuelta so I'm really happy with this stage victory, "said Tim Wellens.
